Cecil Touchon’s paintings bring the “wow” factor into any contemporary or mid-century design.
Touchon is a renowned contemporary American painter, whose career spans thirty-five years. The artist’s paintings and collage works are abstractions based upon typography. Using the technique of collage, Touchon reassembles portions of letter fonts from billboards and printed materials into pure abstractions that transform verbal language into a form of visual architecture. The artists’ works examine and then transcend the various avant-garde movements of the past century, including Cubism and Constructivism.
Touchon’s respect for the history of art give his paintings a unique edge; while his paintings are abstract and non-representational, they manage to masterfully inhabit a myriad of painting traditions such as trompe l’oeil, collage and Color Field painting.
Touchon participated in the Venice Biennial in both 2001 and 2009. His work can be found in major corporate collections and museums throughout the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Chicago Art Institute and the Tate Modern in London.
